Ikebana Table

This delicate table was designed with the simple in mind. In Ikebana (Japanese art of floral arrangement), the simple is treasured. Uncomplicated form, lots of negative space, doing the most with the least amount of material. I wondered what a modern table would look like, if it was designed for displaying such arrangements.

As you can see, there is a great deal of open or negative space employed as a design element, as evidenced in the space between the aprons. The absence of material presents almost an open canvas for displaying a beautiful ikebana arrangement, or a precious piece of art.

At 32″ tall, this table is taller than most. This is to bring your display up to a prominent level of viewing. Despite the greater height, there are some very purposeful restrictions designed into it. First the top is only 12″ square. This limits the amount of display space in order to bring the simple into play.  Also a lower shelf is included, but it is scaled down even further at around 7″. Again, this presents an opportunity to display your most important and precious objects in the most prominent fashion. No room for clutter or complications.

The tapered legs are shaped almost entirely by hand, making each one subtly unique from the rest . The top is cut from a single board, ensuring a perfect grain match and a visual balance. Each surface is honed to a porcelain-like smoothness using hand planes. The refinement offered through hand tools cannot be duplicated, so even a “simple” table is worthy of their use, and so is your experience with this table.
